Drago Endorses: Rough Magic at the Rorschach Theater
Rough Magic is a cool play. You should go see it.
Rough Magic begins in a class room at Columbia University which is taught by a Ghost World-esque grad student named Linda Summers (Gwen Grastorf). She introduces the basic themes of the play in such an authentic college lecture like way that members of the audience will feel compelled to guess the answers to her questions when she looks at them. Basically, this play is about magic and a sorcerer named Prospero.
This leads into another short introductory scene where Prospero (Vasanth Santosham) is using his powers to make the wind and rain more violent. His captive son Caliban has escaped on a boat and Prospero would rather kill him than let him escape. Prospero’s daughter Miranda (Ghillian Porter) is alongside of him, pleading for him to stop and spare the lives of Caliban and the other people on the boat.
The first real scene of the play is a blind-date between Melanie Porter (Tracy Lynn Olivera) and Chet Baxter (Dustin Loomis). An authentic feeling of awkwardness permeates this first meeting. The two of them have a number of irreconcilable differences. They are over a decade apart in age, he’s a lifeguard, she’s a dramaturg, we’ve all been there. For those who don’t know, a dramaturg is someone who studies dramatic compostition and theatrical representation; it comes from the term Dramaturgus which is Latin for “thirty-year-old virgin.” Chet makes several rookie mistakes, such as asking Melanie out to the prom five minutes into the first date.
After Melanie escapes from the awkward date situation, she returns home to find that her apartment has been broken into and there are wet footprints on the floor. The intruder is Caliban (Cesar Guadamuz) who seems just as confused at being there as she is at him being there. Chet comes to save the day, but mostly just stands around while Melanie and Caliban talk. Eventually it is determined that Melanie is some kind of sorceress, Chet is a child-warrior and Caliban’s evil brother and sister are chasing him.
The three of them escape Melanie’s apartment with Caliban’s evil siblings following close behind them. Ariel (Danny Gavigan) and Sasia (Diana Cherkas) have been given magic powers by their father Prospero. She has the power to control fire and he has the power to be super-goth or something. Also, they both have fangs for some reason. Their costumes are designed in such a way that we were expecting them to engage in some kind of slow motion fight, while Evanescence played in the background, at some point in the play.
Naturally with these two badasses chasing after them, the three good guys seek the help of the dude who sells flowers in Little Shop of Horrors and three tranny cabaret singers who are actually mythological Furies. After that, the story starts to get a little weird.
We don’t want to give too much away, but here are some superlatives.
Most attractive character/cast member: Miranda. Wardrobe has chosen to make all of her costumes either sheer or perforated, and we support this decision.
Most likely to be mistaken for Wilmer Valderrama: Caliban. Caliban also wins for Most likely to be mistaken for a velociraptor.
Best lip-synced rendition of “It’s Raining Men”: The three Furies. Hey, maybe turn up the volume a little bit next time, sound guys.
Biggest Design Flaw in the Program Handed Out Opening Night: No staples in the middle of the program so all the pages kept falling out. Come on, seriously.
Coolest Real Tattoo on a Cast Member: “Where the Wild Things Are” arm tattoo on Tisiphone. We’ve thought of getting one, but now we can’t because (s)he had it first. D’oh!
