Drago Endorses: This Film is Not Rated
This Film is Not Yet Rated is a documentary which discusses and investigates the MPAA and the film rating process. It’s actually kind of terrifying how similar this movie is to Why We Fight. They both are very cynical about media in America and they both cover the way huge corporations regulate the news and information that we as a people have access to. But fuck all that serious stuff, here’s why you should see the movie:
They interview all the directors of our favorite movies. Kevin Smith, John Waters, Matt Stone, the woman who directed American Psycho (can you believe that was directed by a woman?), etc. about how they got NC-17 ratings put on their movies and what they had to do to change them. Some of the most interesting parts are split-screens where they show similar things happening in movies that got very different ratings. They also talk about the beginnings of the MPAA and the ways that the MPAA does business. It is a very shady organization which is clouded in secrecy and makes completely arbitrary decisions. They don’t tell film-makers what they need to change about the movie to get a better rating, and other nefarious dealings.
But this is what’s really gangster about this movie is they have a private investigator find out who all of the movie raters are, then they follow them around and video tape them, and then they submit the surveillance footage to the board to be rated. Can you imagine how awesome it would have been to be in the room when they were reviewing that movie? Sitting there together watching themselves eating dinner with their families or whatever they were doing? That’s got to be a serious trip for them.
