Drago Endorses: Ed Bones

Brake Fast Records is one of our favorite up and coming Baltimore hip hop crews. They always put on a good stage show and they have been getting to open for some great national rap acts in the Baltimore clubs. The only criticism that we have about them is, while they all obviously like and respect each other, they should not all be on the same stage at the same time. They each have their own energy and direction, and when they perform together there is a visible tension between them. Fortunately, they have been getting enough attention together that they have started performing separately.
The two stand-outs of the crew areĀ A-Class and Ed Bones. A-Class is the witty battle-rapper of the group. He is a small-framed, average-height Asian guy and watching him tear apart big scary tough guys in freestyle cyphers is reminiscent of what it must have been like to see Eminem battle back in the olden days. A-Class has been getting a lot of local attention lately for a successful run on the 92Q on-air freestyle contests.
Ed Bones is the reason that we are writing this. Bones has just released a new EP called Elf and it is by far the strongest thing that we have heard from him. This kid just keeps getting better. His beats are harder than ever and really sound quite professional. Not like something that you are going to hear on the radio, but that’s because the radio loves bullshit.
If you’ve not heard Bones, you should really check out his MySpace. Some of the best songs off the new EP are on the MySpace for your listening pleasure. Our two favorite songs from the album are Spring Cleaning and Letter B, but you are free to choose your own favorites. Bones has a dark and moody sound which is similar to Sage Francis or possibly a young Cage, sans the omnipresent drug references. Interestingly enough, we’ve heard rumors that Bones has been working on some mixtapes with Cage and El-P. If that’s true, fucking send us some mp3s of it because that’s something we really want to hear.
Ed Bones is destined for some big things, try to see him in Baltimore before he blows up and try to get a copy of Elf, if you can. We were at a party the other night where Bones and his brother were passing out cds and they ran out within five minutes. We actually had to steal our copy from some other guy who wasn’t paying attention.
Also, this is really random, but we would love to hear Bones do a joke song in a fake dirty south accent and be all like “Ed Booones! Who? Ed Booones! Who? Ed Booones… etc” on some Mike Jones shit. We feel like he probably has too much self-respect to go that route, but it would definitely be funny.

Don’t fake on Ed Bones. He’s on point 25 hours of the day. One day I’m gonna take my kids to see him and they’ll ask “Daddy why’s that white guys beard so scruffy?” I’ll say “Shut the fuck up, thats Ed Bones!”
