Drago Endorses: Dykes to Watch Out For

Dykes to watch out for is a long running alternative comic strip which recently passed the 500 strip mark. Back in the college days when we were “experimenting” with creative writing classes, there was a professor in one of the English buildings who had a bunch of pro-gay propaganda (is that the right word?) on her door. She used to always have the week’s new DTWOF strip up and we would stop from time to time to check it out.

It is a very earnest and genuine comic strip which seems to have long ago abandoned the idea that talking about gay culture is shocking enough to be interesting. Lately, it seems to focus more on politics, small business ownership in the world of mega-corporations, and the decline of basic human intelligence in America. It treats the lesbian orientations of its characters as just a fact of life which comes up sometimes, more than a dramatic device.

It is interesting to view the queer world from such an understated and (we assume) true to life point of view. In an era where gays are the new minstrels, you don’t see many gay characters who aren’t screaming “Fabulous!” or lesbians who don’t dance on stage at the intro to their talk show. Or, to more accurately describe the average American male’s daily interaction with “lesbians,” look like plastic figurines who make out with each other for the attention of men.

But anyway, Dykes to Watch Out For is quite good and you should check it out. It’s almost like the same kind of message as Aaron McGruder’s Boondocks, but about a different group of people.
